Privacy Policy — ZenShare

This Privacy Policy describes how ZenShare (“the App”) handles information on your device. Please read it carefully before using the App.

1. Overview

ZenShare is a local area network (LAN) file-sharing application. It is designed to transfer files directly between devices on the same Wi-Fi or wired network. The App does not connect to the internet and does not transmit any data to the developer or any third party.

2. Information the App Collects and Stores

All data described below is stored locally on your device only and is never sent to any external server.

2.1 Device Name

The App allows you to set a display name for your device (e.g. “My Phone”). This name is broadcast over the local network so that other devices running ZenShare can identify you.
Defaults to your device’s system hostname if not customised.
Stored in the app’s local preferences on your device.

2.2 Device Identifier

A random UUID (universally unique identifier) is generated the first time you launch the App. It is used solely to route file-transfer sessions between devices on the same local network.
This identifier is not linked to any personal account, email address, or identity.

2.3 App Settings

Your chosen download folder path, TCP port number, and display name are saved locally in the app’s preferences so your settings persist between sessions.
These settings never leave your device.

2.4 Transferred Files

Files you send or receive are read from or written to the file system of your device. The App does not read the contents of files for any purpose other than transferring them to the device you have explicitly selected.
Received files are saved to the download folder you have configured in Settings.

3. Information Shared on the Local Network

When the App is open, the following information is broadcast on your local network via mDNS/Bonjour so that nearby devices running ZenShare can discover each other:

Your device display name
Your device identifier (random UUID)
The IP address and TCP port used by the App

This information is visible to any device on the same local network. It is not transmitted over the internet.

4. Information the App Does NOT Collect

The App does not collect analytics or usage statistics.
The App does not use advertising SDKs or tracking libraries.
The App does not access your contacts, camera, microphone, location, or any other sensor.
The App does not create any account or require registration.
The App does not send any data to the developer or any third-party service.
File transfers are not encrypted (plain TCP). Do not use this App to share sensitive files over untrusted networks.

5. Permissions

The App requests only the permissions necessary for local network file transfer:

Permission	Purpose
Local Network / Wi-Fi access	Discovering nearby devices and transferring files over the local network
Storage / Files access (Android)	Reading files you choose to send and saving received files to your download folder
Bonjour / mDNS (iOS, macOS)	Broadcasting your device on the local network so others can find you

The App does not request permission to access the internet, contacts, camera, microphone, or location.

6. Data Retention and Deletion

All data (settings and device identifier) is stored in the app’s local preferences. You can delete it at any time by uninstalling the App or clearing the App’s data through your device’s system settings.
Received files are stored in your chosen download folder. You can delete them at any time using your device’s file manager.
The App does not retain any data on external servers because no data is ever sent there.

7. Children’s Privacy

The App does not knowingly collect any information from children under the age of 13 (or the applicable age of digital consent in your jurisdiction). Because the App collects no personal information from any user, it is suitable for use by all ages within a supervised home or school network.

8. Security

All file transfers occur directly between devices over your local network using plain TCP. No data passes through any server or cloud service. Because the connection is unencrypted, we recommend using ZenShare only on trusted private networks (your home or office Wi-Fi). Do not use the App on public Wi-Fi networks to transfer sensitive files.

9. Changes to This Policy

If this policy is updated, the new version will be included with the App update and the Effective date at the top of this document will be revised. Continued use of the App after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.

ZenShare collects no personal data and operates entirely on your local network. Your files and settings stay on your device.
